TEN YEARS AGO AT GREEN MOUNTAIN WIRELESS     Jeff's Photo
Compiled by Jeff Freeman N1YTY

With the recent sad news of Albert Poirier W1AJP-SK we look back and in year 2000 we were planning how to mark 20 years since the founding of GMWS in December of 1980.  In a brief history of GMWS from that year the last president listed there was  John Trombly N1YSD in 2000 with Bernie Orcutt VP.  Later in this decade we find a sequence of presidents who were: Albert Poirier W1AJP 2002, 2003; Deb Clark NN1C-SK 2005,2006; Bert Morton W1DFU 2007 and John Gladding N1HLG 2008 to now.

In May 2000 Jeff N1YTY was the “fox” for the Tuesday Fox Hunt then.  Later we came to know the crafty Albert Poirier as the Fox in that dark pickup in a dark hiding space using his Tech privileges on local 2 meter.

It may now be time to once again pool our living memory and various sources to compile a write up of the history of the 2000-2010 years.  For now we can reflect on Albert Poirier’s time with Green Mountain Wireless Society.

PREZ SEZ for June, 2010

                                                                                                                 new president.jpg

Hello all,

Well, Field Day has come and cone for another year, and I hope everyone that was able to participate had a great time.

The Weather Gods treated us fairly well over the weekend, waiting until after set-up was accomplished before releasing rain on our location..... and then shutting it off just in time for tear-down. I guess we cant ask for much more than that really.

A few of us did get a little soaking when we changed out a feed line on the 80 meter dipole Saturday night, due to a malfunction, but after that, we seemed to do OK.

Bert, W1DFU brought his "CW-mobile" Motor home, that is...... up to the site to keep the CW Ops warm and comfortable for the event.  Kudos to Bert for rounding up a group of CW friends and contacts to come in and give him a hand.  From the groups of folks that were passing through the "Shack" it looks like he may have already started recruiting for FD 2011.  Don't have the final scores yet, but Frank, W1AD says it looks promising.

Frank, and Rich, WB2RUM, Thanks to you both for once again providing us with a "gangbusters" logging computer system and program for the event. It just keeps getting better and better.... .

And thanks to Dan Smith, Smith Telecommunications Co once again for the use of the Aerial Lift unit which provides us for the platform for our Tri-Band beam.

RF conditions for the event were pretty good..... Ben N1UKK working the VHF/UHF Station said 6 Meters was open for much of the weekend.  Other bands seemed ok despite recurring problems with the 80 Meter Dipole which was overhauled and replaced in a 15 minute 'switcheroo' late Sunday morning, and it was off and running again.

Thanks, and applause to Ben N1UKK for coordinating and keeping us supplied with food and beverages for the 38 hour stint, topped off with a great Lasagna Dinner on Saturday evening.  Anyone who came away hungry from Field Day this weekend just wasn't trying.

And a big thank you to Ann Mary, AB1CH,  Janet KB1DSR, and Gerry WY2Y, who got our publicity out, got the signs made and placed in their appropriate spots, and really pulled the GOTA Station together and kept it filled with operators, all of who like they were having loads of fun.  Hopefully, a few more licensees for next year.

And to all of the other 20 or so folks who banded together Friday and Saturday to get all of the antenna lines shot over their respective supports, the antennas raised and connected, wires run, and hooked up to rigs and generators and whatever.  Bob, N1PBP, thank you for the loan of the generator which ran flawlessly... and kept us running on auxiliary power.

And last, but not least, Thanks to Tim KB1RRN and Lorri KB1QAJ for adorning the front page of the Local Section of Mondays Rutland Herald when we all woke up Monday.  Nice photo folks.

A couple of quick notes.   For those of you who may be looking for other activities to assist on, Rob Mather N1XSS Rob@mather1.com  and The Connecticut Valley FM Association are looking for some volunteers to assist with communications for the Vermont 100 Endurance Race on July 17 & 18 in and around the Woodstock VT area.  The event is a 100 mile foot race with some 300 participants.  For more information contact Rob@mather.com.\pcoming events:  Saturday/Sunday August 7&8th.  The MS Vermont Challenge starting at Castleton College each day with loops South through Bennington County, and Addison County with about 400 participants.  We are looking for about 20-25 or more volunteers to provide communications coverage for this annual event.  Both UHF & VHF are utilized, both portable and mobile units.  Contact N1hlg@aol.com or give me a call at 438-2233 for more details.

Also The VT Sun 1/2 Triathlon, a swim, bike and run event centered around Branbury Beach State Park on Sunday August 29th.  Another annual event providing coverage for up to 300 runners and cyclists.  This is a primarily a VHF event and a good one to get involved with for some of our newer members.

And finally, don't forget our GMWS meeting 7PM July 13th at The American Red Cross building on Strongs Ave. in Rutland City.  Everyone, licensed or not, invited to attend.

This has been a great month.  I hope you all had as much fun at Field Days as I did.  Thanks to all who participated, and donated for the event.

'73',

John, N1HLG

1A. Pres John N1Hlg called the meeting order at 7:15pm with 20 members and guests present.
1B. Sec Report:  Ann Mary AB1CH made the motion (MM), second (2nd) Chris N6EUP to accept the May minutes by Rich WB2RUM as published in KK’s – approved.
1C. Treas Report: Tim KB1RNN MM, 2nd Ben N1UKK, to accept as presented by Treas Dave KD6RA – approved.
Old Business:
2A. Club Apparel: are in – see John N1HLG after the meeting.
2B. Club & FD Banners:  John N1HLG showed the banners to all, done by Mitchell T’s, printed instead of applied letters and graphics. This allowed for more colors, especially on the club emblem. They look great and just in time for FD.  Thanks to Robin N1WWW for all her work, and to Ann Mary AB1CH for getting us started.
2C. Public Service Events:
MS Bike Tour will be Aug 7 & 8, starting and finishing both days at Castleton State College at about 7:30am.  Need about 20 Hams to help out for any or all of the shifts.  This will be a VHF and UHF event, and we can work with whatever equipment you have, or more is available for loaners if you are interested but lack the hardware.
VT Sun 1/2 Triathlon Will be held on Sunday 29 August, starting at 8am, from Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore. We need about 15 Hams for this VHF only event.  Again – equipment available!
These are great events to get your feet wet and we can always pair you up with an experienced operator to get you used to Controlled Net events and tactical communications.  A good time is always guaranteed!  If interested contact John N1HLG@aol.com.
2D. Email Reminder Lists: Bert W1DFU volunteered to work with Rich WB2RUM and Dave KD6RA, to gather a club email list to use to send out email reminders for meeting reminders and other special events.  It can be used to let folks know when KK’s is posted each month, and can have a hyperlink right to the website.  Rich can also get us club email addresses, with forwarding capability.
New Business:
3A. Octoberfeast: IMO Albert W1AJP SK:  A lengthy discussion was held about a change of venue for this year's Octoberfeast and the increasing costs involved.  Lorri KB1QAJ and Ann Mary AB1CH volunteered to call around and see what might be available locally.
3B. Repeater Site Possibility: Wayne KB1FDW and John N1HLG have been looking into a new, and higher elevation, repeater site using the WCAX tower on Boardman Hill.  It does have a back-up generator but access is by 4WD or snowmobile in the winter.  A letter of interest will be sent. More info to follow.
3C. Red Cross EOC: Gerry WY2Y has requested that a phone hook-up be put into the radio room when the rewiring is taking place in the building.  It was pointed out that if this was to serve as the Communications EOC in a disaster, that actually multiple lines would be needed.  More to follow.
3D. Polo Shirt of Albert’s W1AJP:  He had ordered a polo shirt with the club order and it was decided that we would get a fabric pen and some type of case for it, have members sign it, and present it to his family.
4A. FIELD DAY 2010: Pre-meeting at Seward’s Dairy Bar at noon 25 June, followed by set-up at 2PM at Rutland High School in our same location.  Operational 2pm 26 June to 2pm 27 June and break down to follow.  Gerry WY2Y has volunteered, with help from Ann Mary AB1CH, to be “GOTA Coach”.  Antennas organized by John N1HLG with Jeff KA1OLE and Bob WA1ONT – but all hands will be needed to assist.  Ben N1UKK will be heading the food.  Bob N1PBP will provide the generator. The school has OK’ed the use of the rest rooms. Jeff N1YTY and Ann Mary AB1CH will handle the solar power bonus.  Frank W1AD will get a 6m Rig set up. Bring chairs if you have them.  Any equipment you bring – make sure your name/call sign is attached.  Frank W1AD will give a 10 minute educational program for bonus points – topic TBD. Frank W1AD MM, second Lorri KB1QAJ, to provide $100 for Ben N1UKK to get food items, etc – approved.
4B. Adjournment at 8:50pm.

Respectfully submitted, Janet KB1DSR, GMWS Secretary
